Chemistry
“Nothing can be more certain than this: that we are just beginning to learn something of the wonders of the world on which we live and move and have our being.” – William Ramsay, Chemist/Nobel Prize Winner
Chemistry
Chemistry can be defined as the “Study of Matter”; studying the composition, structure and properties of matter and how it reacts and changes when exposed to different situations. Chemistry students develop excellent laboratory techniques in addition to specific knowledge in the fields of Chemistry. Students also pick up skills from other overlapping subjects such as Biology and Medicine, Physics and Engineering, and even Geology and Earth Sciences. Other common skills gained include the ability to analyse complex data sets, general analytical/mathematical skills and attention to detail. Chemists often have had gained an awareness of ethical implications and issues concerning environmental impact and sustainability through undertaking modules with an environmental or social context. Specialisation is essential in Chemistry due to the basic complexity of the subject. Undergraduates will have the opportunity to take up different form of elective modules while Graduates will certainly have to specialise in a particular topic. Chemistry subjects include Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Astrochemistry, and Nuclear Chemistry.

Careers with Chemistry Degree
The complexity of Chemistry often implies that an undergraduate course will be insufficient; almost a third of chemistry undergraduates every so often go down the graduate study route. Chemistry graduate normally undertake research and development positions in a range of different environments – public and private research institutions, universities and numerous private chemical companies. However, research is not the sole path open to chemists. Graduates may pursue, specialist teaching and journalism or other careers for which specialist knowledge will be an asset such as forensics or health and safety related professions.
