Biochemistry

Biochemistry is the bridge between biology and chemistry. It is a laboratory based science that explores the chemical processes within and related to living organisms on a molecular level. It focuses on the structure of the molecules and how it relates to its function. This includes analysing components such as proteins, hormones, enzymes; understanding how cells communicate with each other and how they affect the interactions, regulation and signalling of biochemical pathways. Biochemistry is a key component in the pharmaceutical industry because the chemicals from drugs that are introduced into the body must be studied in relation to the chemical make-up of the body. Biochemists examine what type of chemicals might correct imbalances in the body without adversely affecting other parts of the system. Hence, many medications like anti-depressant drugs (eg. Paxil, Zoloft) have been specifically developed from biochemistry research and pharmaceutical research and development remains a hugely important field for biochemistry.

Begin your Journey into Education Overseas

Biochemistry students can expect to gain an appreciation of how living systems operate and equip themselves with chemical knowledge and techniques. They will acquire modern biotechnical practical skills that will prepare them to tackle potential emerging biological problems, develop new products or tackle disease.
