This & That #103: What you need to know to be in the field of Veterinary Sciences in Singapore
Career Options and Paths
When considering an academic future in Veterinary Sciences you would first look at what careers you could pursue. The most common and familiar of the veterinary careers are Clinical Practices which have the most direct contact with the general public. Either practicing in private or employed by organizations, there are options available for veterinary graduates. In Singapore some hiring organizations are the Singapore Turf Club, Zoological Gardens, Jurong Bird Park and Underwater World. These organizations are also involved with developing preventive medicine programs and the treatment of a wide variety of animal species.
There are also options open in the area of Small Animal Practice where vets are presented with the more common domestic animals, such as dogs, cats and fish. This career line opens the practitioner to be involved in multiple aspects of animal care and encountering medical situations in a variety of different animal species. Vets in this field routinely examine and provide treatment for these animals; ranging from vaccinations, performing surgical procedures to prevention of disease transmission from animal to people.
In Singapore due to the lack of veterinary colleges, there are limited careers in research & academia. However, Veterinarians may work in local research facilities, which work on preventative medicines, diagnosis and treatment, and other research activities concerning animals used for research. Veterinarians may also be found in Multi-National Corporations and other large companies involved with the productions and supply of pharmaceutical products, or medical and veterinary technologies, pet food or specialized feed producers.
Therefore there are a wide variety of career paths for a veterinary student to embark on, giving you the options and flexibility within this field of study.
Licensing and Recognition of Veterinary Degrees
Veterinary Sciences can be a fun, thrilling and fulfilling course of study and career. However, you need to know that licencing and practicing in Singapore requires you to obtain a degree from a school which is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) or the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC).
These degrees need to be accepted and recognised by the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA). However, those who obtain veterinary degrees from non-recognised universities may still be eligible for licensing based on passes in the RCVS Statutory Examination for Membership; North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE); Australian National Veterinary Examination (ANVE) or the New Zealand Veterinary Examination (NZNVE).
Academic Requirements
Let’s be honest, the demand for admission to veterinary schools and courses far exceeds the number of places available. The competition is stiff and the academics prerequisites are of extremely high standards. As such, many universities require the prospective students to have had experience with animal and strong exposure to the profession.
Students thinking of going to the UK or other Commonwealth universities can apply directly from A-Levels or the equivalent. The undergraduate course takes on average five to six years to complete and require high academic achievements to matriculate into the course.
On the other hand veterinary schools in North America have different requirements. To enroll and matriculate, students are required to enter a college for 2 to 4 years of pre-veterinary undergraduate science degree programs. This is then followed by a 4 year DVM course. Only then can a student graduate with a degree in veterinary sciences.
