Geography
“The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.” – Barrack Obama
Geography
Geography is the science which strives to explain the world surrounding us and the impact of both natural and man-made factors and events. It is more fitting to view Geography as a broad academic subject and not just a single subject. The field of Geography is divided into 2 main branches – Physical Geography and Human Geography.
Physical Geography refers to the study of physical processes and natural environment, relating to Earth Sciences. Examples include the climate, weather systems, earthquakes and rock formation. On the other hand, Human Geography refers to human societies and the relations between people and planet. In this instance, it leans towards aspects of social science such as Anthropology, Sociology and Politics with issues such as population changes, cultural or religious practices, and aspects of globalisation. Generally, BSc/MSc options correspond to Physical Geography whereas BA/MA is in accord with Human Geography.
Thus, there is a myriad of topics for Geography undergraduates to choose to specialise in. Examples of specialisations include, and not limited to, Cultural Geography, Environmental Geography, Glaciers and Glaciations, Historical Geography, Hydrology, Political Geography, Population Geography, Urban Geography & Urban Studies to name some.
