Newcastle University is founded in 1834 as a school of medicine and surgery, before becoming independent in 1963. The University is a member of the Russell Group of leading UK research universities and one of the largest EU research portfolio in the UK. It is the first UK university to establish a dedicated campus for medicine at its NUMed Campus in Malaysia. The University is also a proud member of the Athena SWAN charter recognising employment practices that promotes gender equality.
Newcastle University is ranked 141st in the world by the 2019 QS World University Rankings.
