Queen’s University Belfast was opened in 1849 as “Queen’s College, Belfast”, being UK’s 9th oldest university that gained university status in 1908. The University is the member of the Russell Group of leading research universities. The University is also known for research commercialisation. It has created more than 70 spin-out companies and is in the top 5 in the UK for Intellectual property (IP) commercialisation and ranked number one in the UK for its participation in Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP).
Queen’s University Belfast is ranked 180th in the world by the 2019 QS World University Rankings. The University is rated between 201st and 250th in the world and 32nd in the UK according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018. The University was ranked joint 42nd in the UK for the quality (GPA) of its research and 19th for its Research Power in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. The University also achieved the Queen’s Anniversary Award for work in comprehensive cancer services and improving survival rates for patients in Northern Ireland as well as in the field of engineering and technology.
