University of Gloucestershire was founded as Cheltenham Mechanics' Institute in 1834 and gained university status in 2001. Since then, it has been committed to nurturing the holistic development of staff and students and achieve excellence in research and creativity. The University maintained an environmental sustainability strategy since 1993 and was the first British University to meet the ISO 14001 environmental management standard.
The University of Gloucestershire is ranked 55th in the UK by The Guardian University League Tables 2019. The University was accorded the Teaching Excellence Framework Silver Award in 2018. The University was ranked sixth in the People and Planet Green League in 2015. 83% of Gloucestershire students expressed overall satisfaction with their experience in the 2015 National Student Survey.
